My fitness tracker said I burned 4,200 calories yesterday. I was so proud. I posted a screenshot in my group chat. My friend Sarah, who actually knows things, replied: "Jamie, it was 102 degrees yesterday. Your watch is lying to you."
I checked the weather app. She was right. 102Β°F. Austin in July. The kind of heat that makes you question every life decision that led you to Texas. And my watch? It doesn't know about heat. It knows heart rate and steps and maybe GPS if the satellite is feeling generous. It does not know that exercising in 102-degree heat is not the same as exercising in 72-degree air conditioning.
I did some research. Turns out, fitness trackers overestimate calorie burn in heat by 15-30%. Something about elevated heart rate from thermoregulation getting confused with elevated heart rate from exertion. Your body is working hard to cool down, so your heart rate goes up, so your watch thinks you're running faster than you are. It's not malicious. It's just wrong.
I ran 4.2 miles yesterday. In the morning, before the worst of the heat, but still at 8 AM when it was already 88 degrees. My watch said 4,200 calories. A more realistic estimate, accounting for heat and my actual pace (which was embarrassingly slow), is probably closer to 2,800. That's a difference of 1,400 calories. Which is, coincidentally, about the number of calories in the breakfast tacos I ate afterward. I told myself I "earned" them. My watch agreed. Math did not.
This is the problem with wearable data in extreme climates. Austin isn't the only place dealing with this. Phoenix hit 118 last month. Las Vegas is basically a furnace with slot machines. Miami has humidity that makes you feel like you're swimming through air. And millions of people are making diet and exercise decisions based on numbers that their watches are pulling out of thin air. Or hot air, in our case.
I've started adjusting my expectations. When it's over 95 degrees, I subtract 25% from my watch's calorie estimate. When it's over 100, I subtract 35%. It's not scientific, but it's closer to reality than believing I burned 4,200 calories on a slow jog. I also run earlier now. 6 AM instead of 8 AM. The difference between 78 degrees and 88 degrees is the difference between a decent workout and a heat advisory.
My watch is still on my wrist. I still check it. But I check it the way I check weather forecasts β with a healthy dose of skepticism and a backup plan. Because 4,200 calories is a fantasy. And breakfast tacos, unfortunately, are very real.
I talked to my doctor about this last week. She laughed and said she sees patients all summer who are confused by their watch data. "One guy came in convinced he was burning 5,000 calories a day because his watch told him so. He couldn't understand why he wasn't losing weight. I had to explain that his watch was counting heat stress as exercise." She shook her head. "Technology is great until it lies to you."
She recommended I track perceived exertion instead of relying solely on calorie counts. The Borg scale β rate your effort from 1 to 10. Yesterday's run was probably a 7 in the first mile and an 8.5 by the third. My watch thought it was a consistent 6.5 because my heart rate was elevated the whole time, but that elevation was partly heat, partly hills, partly the fact that I was cursing under my breath for the last mile.
I also started weighing myself before and after runs to track water loss. In 102-degree heat, I lose 2-3 pounds of water on a 4-mile run. That's not fat loss. That's dehydration. But if I didn't know better, I might celebrate that number on the scale. I might think my "calories out" exceeded my "calories in" and reward myself with more tacos. The feedback loop of bad data leading to bad decisions is real, and it's especially dangerous in extreme heat when your body is already under stress.
So here's my new rule: the watch is a tool, not a truth. It tells me my heart rate, my pace, my distance. It does not tell me how many calories I burned, not accurately, not in Texas summer. For that, I need math, common sense, and the humility to admit that a $200 wrist computer doesn't know my body better than I do.
