Measurements
How to Measure
- Neck: Measure below the larynx (Adam's apple), perpendicular to the long axis of the neck.
- Waist (men): Measure at the navel level, horizontal, at the end of a normal exhale.
- Waist (women): Measure at the narrowest point (or at navel if no narrow point).
- Hip (women): Measure at the widest point of the buttocks.
- Use a non-stretch tape. Don't pull tight — just snug.
How It Works
US Navy Method: This estimator uses the US Navy tape measure method, which has been validated against underwater weighing with a margin of error of approximately plusmn3-4%.
How to Use: Enter your neck, waist, and (for women) hip measurements. The tool calculates body fat percentage using the standardized Navy equations.
Limitations: This method assumes average bone density and may underestimate body fat in very lean individuals or overestimate in those with significant muscle mass.
Tips: Measure at the same time of day, preferably in the morning. Use a non-stretch tape and keep it snug but not tight.
